Branding 101: It’s more than just pretty colors and logos

Written by Bri White

When it comes to branding, if your audience doesn’t “get” you, it’s not going to work out. It’s critical to make sure that whatever product or service you’re offering has a solid audience behind it. No audience = no business!

So, how do you make sure your brand is a perfect match, visually and through paid media to get you clicks? Let’s break it down!

1. Know Your Audience Like Your Best Friend
First things first—get to know your audience. Kick things off by defining who your “ideal customer” is. What do they like? What makes them tick? If your business is a gorgeous new coffee shop in the middle of the city, who do you imagine walking through those doors on a Monday morning?  Tools like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights are great for digging into their habits and preferences.

2. Keep Your Visuals Consistent (But Fun)
Your visuals should match your vibe. Whether sleek or playful, your brand needs to look polished and consistent across platforms. The last thing you want to do is confuse your audience. If your mission is to provide a quiet haven for those who work from home to escape their living room, you may want to choose some cool tones to set the vibe instead of a loud red (but we’re not here to judge). Use Canva or Adobe Spark to maintain consistency, from your logo to your colors. And don’t forget to add a little personality—your audience will love that!

3. Make Paid Media Work for You
Paid media is your chance to shine, but it has to fit your audience’s interests. Use Facebook Ads Manager or Google Ads to target specific segments and tailor your ads accordingly. Here’s where strong copy will work wonders! Establish a tone that matches your business ethos and carry that through. Talk to your audience in a way that’s familiar to them. Your cutesy coffee shop may cater to Millennials instead of Gen Z. The chatter may be similar but it won’t resonate in the same way. Define that and generate some eye-catching headlines that will force users to click during their online search for “coffee near me”.

4. Add Some Emotion
Humans connect with emotions, not logos. Use visuals that speak to your audience’s feelings—whether it's excitement, relief, or joy. Share success stories or behind-the-scenes moments to build an emotional connection. Tell them how you are providing a needed SOLUTION.

5. Keep Evolving
Brands are always evolving, and yours should too. Keep testing, refining, and listening to feedback.
