Why You Should Stop Trying to Beat the Algorithm

Written by Brianna White

We’ve all heard complaints in regards to social media algorithms or made the complaints ourselves. Almost all of them sing to the tune of “bring back chronological order timelines”. If you have had this thought, this blog is for you.

While they may come with what some may consider to be annoying obstacles to defeat, algorithms are in place to enhance user experience.

At face value an algorithm is a considerably harmless method to ensure general social media users are presented with content that resonates with them. In a nutshell the users who enjoy primarily health and beauty content aren’t shown an overwhelming amount of football content that they will more than likely not engage with, likely resulting in more time spent on the platform. With the number of posts shared on any given social media platform per day, algorithms are almost a necessity to ensure users aren’t bombarded with thousands of posts per second.

And every social media platform has enhanced their algorithmic equations creating a more desirable experience. But what about the businesses looking to directly target potential customers? How do they beat the algorithm? Simple answer? Meet your audience where they are. Producing content that directly speaks to your target audience will increase the likelihood of reaching said audience. If you have actively been listening to your audience, this shouldn’t be much of a cumbersome task.

We should mention that algorithms are not at all perfect and they are constantly changing causing digital marketers like ourselves to continuously update social media strategy to adhere to the rise in demand. The goal is to stand out!

Hootsuite provided the following 7 tips to ensure you are reaching your audience and maximizing your chances of conversion.

  2. Deliver what you promise
